Perici Amphitheater’s yearly Rock the Park concert series is just around the corner, with the band lineup finalized and tickets on sale as of April 19.
Entering its sixth year, the summer concert series will kick off June 14 and rock through Aug. 16, featuring several acclaimed tribute bands and national acts.
This year will showcase tribute bands for Bon Jovi, Heart, Queen, Meatloaf, Pat Benatar and more. Aaron Lewis, former front man of rock band Staind and touring country artist, will headline the Jagermeister Country Tour June 28.
The Cleveland Pops Orchestra will also perform during the July 5 fireworks night.
All shows are strictly 21 years and older, except the Cleveland Pops Orchestra show and fireworks night.
Parks and Recreation Director Derek Schroeder said he expects each show to draw crowds of roughly 1,000 each.
“Just based on previous attendances and with the excitement that seems to be coming and people starting to know the series and the venue, we’re hoping to have about 1,000 people at each show,” Schroeder said. “We’re anticipating selling out the country show at about 1,600 tickets.”
With the exception of Wanted: The Bon Jovi Tribute Band, every act in the 2013 lineup is new to Rock The Park. “Wanted” played at Perici in the 2012 series.
Schroeder said being able to book national shows like the Jagermeister Country Tour and Almost Queen was a challenge, involving extensive negotiations and scheduling with managers and lawyers.
“We had almost arranged our entire schedule around [Almost Queen] because they are a nationally-touring tribute band,” Schroeder said. “They’re all over the country. We pretty much had to wait to see when they were coming through to book that show. They’re amazing.
“It’s just showing what our venue can become and what it can accommodate,” Schroeder said.
“It’s a huge part of our job for the summer, these shows.”
Adopting the persona of Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora in Wanted is Twinsburg resident Randy Slama, who said he is excited to be returning to Rock the Park with his band.
“For me, and even for us as a band, it’s really an honor and a privilege to be coming back,” Slama said. “Last year was our first time there but we did have a beautiful night, we had a sold-out VIP deck and the show was extremely well attended. I think there was in excess of 900 people if I’m not mistaken.”
Slama added that he is proud to be able to perform for friends, neighbors and fellow Twinsburg residents while sharing the stage with artists such as Aaron Lewis.
“In the last couple of years, we’ve been able to elevate our game and sharing with artists like that is really cool,” Slama said. “Also, we’ve played the House of Blues and just having the opportunity to play there where others have performed ... it’s really something that honestly, I never thought I would do personally.”
With assistance from long-time presenting sponsor Strachan-Casale Insurance and VIP sponsorship from the Cleveland Clinic, Schroeder said he expects the city to once again turn a significant profit from the concert series. Schroeder estimated that each prior Rock the Park season raised between $30,000 and $40,000, a figure he plans to match this year.
Offering reasonably priced music in an enjoyable outdoor setting is what has allowed Rock the Park to grow to its present level of attendance, according to Schroeder.
“I developed this program six years ago, starting out really small at our outdoor pool and it kind of gained momentum,” Schroeder said. “I think a lot of people in this area like the opportunity to see a good show at an affordable price in a cool, intimate venue. That’s what we promote and that’s we sell. There’s no hassle in the parking lots, there’s no extremely high ticket pricing, refreshments and food are affordable. It’s an affordable night out with your friends. It’s safe, it’s close to home and it’s about the music.”
